Volunteers and Community

SVG has partnered with the United Nations Online Volunteering Project.

This has given SVG the opportunity to publish assignments for those who want to become volunteers in developing countries but cannot travel to the locations where these projects are taking place, because of work schedules, family issues and so on.

If you like browsing in your free time from work, if you would like to share your computer skills and knowledge with those who cannot access these technologies, if you want to bridge the technologic and information gap between developed and developing countries, this is the place!

Some of the info you need to know to join this service:

How do I join this new service?

Search the assignments posted on the svg page at the UN Online Volunteering site and email the UN online volunteering staff regarding the assignment you would want to join. They will revise and send it to us, and from there we will be dealing directly with you. You can search any assignment posted at the UN site from any group by going to www.onlinevolunteering.org and clicking on SEARCH ASSIGNMENTS or SEARCH GROUP.

Is there any fee involved?

No. There are no fees to be paid to or from any of the parts involved in this project. The United Nations offers this service free of charge to those NGOs which have proved their non-for-profit status, work keeping with the principles of the UN Charter, and show a clear commitment to the goals of sustainable human development.

You don't have to pay any fees and the volunteer nature of the job means you will not be paid for it.

What kind of recognition will I get when the job is finished?

At the end of your assignment, you will receive a certificate that will prove the work you have done and that recognises your input in the successful development of one of our community developing projects. If the result of the project is particularly successful, the UN will publish your experience in their webpage and your work will be featured as an example of how online volunteers should develop projects.

As an online volunteer, what is expected from me?

Since you are volunteering using your computer and the Internet, most likely from your own house, you have the flexibility to do the work any time you are free, and from anywhere. There are no schedules (apart from a given end date to the assignment and regular check-ups and information exchange with us).

What are the skills needed?

To become an online volunteer you must possess computer skills; you should be very familiar with Internet and how Internet works, and additionally and depending on the assignment you join, you can use your web design, language, writing, etc. skills.

Tell me some of the assignments I could be given.

Examples of assignments given to online volunteers: translation, database development, creative writing for the development of teaching material, online medical advice, marketing research, web design, online research... .
